As creative professionals, the opportunity to stimulate artistic expression in the next generation is an inspiring one. Such an opportunity came with the One Foundation’s invitation to assist in delivering music and arts education to disadvantaged rural areas in China.
After consulting with One Foundation, local schools and teachers for several months, we developed a series of rudimentary but innovative classroom modifications that aim to break the traditional classroom paradigm; our aim is to encourage creativity and self-expression using space, colour and furniture in non-conventional ways.
The design of the first trial classroom has been adapted to over 600 classrooms, benefitting tens of thousands of pupils.
